“He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds. He determines the number of stars and calls them each by name … His pleasure is not in the strength of the horse, nor his delight in the legs of a man; the LORD delights in those who fear him, who put their hope in his unfailing love.”~ Psalm 147:3-4, 10-11
From the moment I knew I was to be a mother, I started singing. Morning, afternoon and night I serenaded the yet nameless life with any song I could think of. When my boys grew old enough to make requests, sweet cherub faces begged me to sing as I tucked them into bed. Though I covered a lot of musical territory over the years (including every single camp song I could remember from my youth group days), there was one song I sang a thousand times more than any other. Written by Babbie Mason, What Can Separate You said everything I wanted my boys know–REALLY KNOW. After singing, we go over the facts one more time:
“Baby, no matter what happens in life, what choices you make, what choices others make, the disappointments that will take your breath away and the unknowns will come and rock your world … nothing, absolutely NOTHING will ever come between you and the love God has for you. EVER.”
So I sang it again and again, explaining the truth every night for years, until I was certain they knew the words by heart and maybe understood it deeper and better than I ever did.
To hear it for yourself, I’ve loaded it to video feed on the right side. Maybe then you’ll understand why the words of Psalm 147 this past week took me back in time to sweet moments with the ones I love.
Precisely how God feels about us. That’s the point, isn’t it? Every night he sings his sweet words to our souls in the hopes that maybe–Finally!–we’ll get it.
