My Heart is in Haiti

Jan 13, 2010

I had a different post scheduled for today, but I scrapped it for another day.

Today my heart is consumed with Haiti.

Some of you know our family traveled to Haiti in June. You can read about our trip here. Or look at more pictures from our trip posted on my Facebook page.

As I watched CNN last night with my husband and children, looking at the few snapshots available at the time, recognizing the streets we drove down, we were stunned. Haiti was an incredibly fragile place, even without this catastrophe. I cannot comprehend how they will recover from this. It’s absolutely overwhelming.

We’ve been in the process of discussing a follow up trip to Haiti this year. Now I want to go immediately. Not sure if that’s possible, but there are other ways we can help in the meantime.

If you’re aching to do something, contribute to what must be a world-wide effort to rescue and rebuild this country and her people, please go to the New Missions website. One of the best ways you can help is by partnering with an organization that has been there for decades. It’s the only way to insure your contribution makes it past the corruption to the people who truly need it.

And, of course, don’t underestimate the value of your consistent, heart-felt prayers. They will be needed long after these first few days of crisis.

“I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me.” ~ Matthew 25:40

Thank you, Michele and family, for being the hands and feet of Jesus! God is mighty and and He calls to His people to serve as you pointed out from Matthew. May blessings overflow to this country and it’s people and may God be glorified in the midst!

Rhonda, thank you for doing the same. I know of all your tireless effort on behalf of Haiti and New Missions. It will take ALL of us. Diane, this entire week has been profound for our entire family, but especially my boys. I’ve watched them grieve from a place of personal experience. And though I don’t relish the thought of their heartache, I’m so thankful that six months ago we had the opportunity to stand on Haitian soil. We’ll ALL go back, without a doubt … More to come on this next week!

I hope your boys are working through this. It must be especially hard for them. As adults we know that there is tradegy in life and we have learned to accept, not like, but accept it. It has to be more difficult for them.

It is always more upsetting when you see the devastation of a place you’ve actually been to. For those of us watching at home, none of these places are familiar, so we have no frame of reference. I am so sad for the people of Haiti — the shock and devastation they must be feeling. New Missions is a blessing and it’s organizations like them that are so needed because outsiders don’t know how to navigate in order to really help. Thanks for the post, Michele.

Absolutely, Denise. The fact that we have pics of our time in Haiti decorating the walls of our home make it point-blank real. Thanks for your heart for Haiti and New Missions, Denise.

I really, really appreciate your heart. More than you know Michele. Thank you again for giving us another perspective of Haiti.
